Living near heavy machinery or Electrical Equipment

Occasionally, I am asked about homes that are located beside industrial buildings, commercial premises, electrical equipment, or areas where there is frequent heavy machinery. During a recent podcast, this topic came up, and I thought it would be helpful to expand on my answer, as it deserves a little more explanation.

Understanding the Difference
When people talk about “EMFs” (electromagnetic fields), they are often referring to a wide range of electrical or magnetic influences. These can vary enormously depending on the source. The first question to ask is:

What is actually next door? For example, it could be:
  • Industrial machinery
  • Electrical transformers or substations
  • Manufacturing equipment
  • Telecommunications equipment
  • Commercial refrigeration systems
  • Heavy vehicles operating throughout the day
Each produces different types and levels of electrical or magnetic fields, so it is important not to assume they all present the same situation.

Measure before making changes
If you are genuinely concerned about electromagnetic fields, my recommendation is always to begin with reliable information. Rather than relying on assumptions, consider having your home professionally assessed by a suitably qualified environmental consultant who can measure the levels present. This allows any decisions to be based on evidence rather than uncertainty.

From a Feng Shui Perspective
Feng Shui looks at much more than electromagnetic fields alone. Even when scientific measurements are within accepted guidelines, a neighbouring industrial environment may still influence how a home feels. Factors such as:
  • Constant background noise
  • Vibration
  • Visual impact
  • Artificial lighting
  • Continuous activity
  • A general lack of tranquillity can all affect our sense of comfort and wellbeing.

One of the principles of Feng Shui is creating spaces that encourage rest, balance and restoration. Practical Ways to Support Your Home If one wall of your home borders a busy industrial area or neighbouring machinery, you may wish to consider:
  1. Positioning larger items of solid furniture, such as wardrobes or bookcases, against that wall where practical.
  2. Avoiding placing your bed or favourite chair directly against the affected wall if another layout is possible.
  3. Using healthy indoor plants, where suitable, to introduce fresh, living energy.
  4. Improving sound insulation if noise is a significant issue.
  5. Keeping the room well ventilated and free from unnecessary clutter.

These changes will not eliminate electromagnetic fields, but they can help create a space that feels calmer, more balanced and more supportive.

- A Note on Shielding -
People sometimes ask whether specialist paints or other materials can block electromagnetic fields. While there are specialist shielding products available for certain situations, these should only be considered after the type and source of any electromagnetic field has been properly identified. Different types of fields require different approaches, and not all shielding products are suitable for every circumstance. For this reason, I recommend seeking professional advice before investing in specialist shielding materials.

- Bringing It Back to Balance -
At Feng Shui Matters, my focus is always on creating homes that support the people who live within them. Sometimes that involves furniture placement. Sometimes it involves improving light, ventilation or reducing clutter. Sometimes it simply means helping people feel more comfortable and in control of their surroundings. Every home is unique, and every situation deserves to be assessed individually. A calm home begins with good information, thoughtful design, and an environment that supports both body and mind.
